Start with the house, not the foot

Per-foot numbers hide what actually decides your total in San Antonio: which of three common house types you own.

The 1950s–80s ranch with no gutters. Northwest of downtown, in Leon Valley, and along the older streets of Converse and Universal City, builders on caliche lots skipped gutters altogether. These homes rarely need a full wrap. Front elevation, garage side and the patio slab are usually the runs that matter, 70–110 feet, and the job is $700–$1,400. Whole-house on a single-story ranch, 140–170 feet, is $1,400–$2,200. First-time installation explains which walls get them.

The 1995–2015 two-story in Stone Oak, Cibolo or Schertz. Built with 5-inch .027 aluminum on spikes that have been backing out of the fascia for a decade. Replacement is 190–240 feet with six to eight downspouts, quoted in 6-inch with 3x4 downspouts because the roofs are big and steep: $2,400–$3,400, tear-off included.

The Hill Country hip-roof custom in Boerne, Helotes or Fair Oaks Ranch. One story but sprawling, 240–320 feet, ten or more inside corners, often a standing-seam or tile roof. Every corner is a hand-mitered joint and the metal roof needs a different hanger, so these run $3,000–$4,800 even without copper.

Per-foot rates for seamless aluminum

GutterInstalled, per foot
5-inch .027 aluminum, 2x3 downspouts (builder grade)$9 – $11
5-inch .032 aluminum, 3x4 downspouts$10 – $12
6-inch .032 aluminum, 3x4 downspouts$12 – $14
Copper half-round$35 – $55

Those rates include forming the coil in your driveway, hidden hangers on 24-inch centers, all miters and outlets, downspouts to grade, and hauling away whatever was there before. The first and second rows differ by a dollar or two a foot, which buys thicker metal and downspouts with twice the capacity. A spring thunderstorm here can drop an inch in twenty minutes, so we don't sell the first row unless you insist. The installation page covers how we size a system to your roof area.

Repair prices

JobPrice
Reseal a corner, end cap or outlet$150 – $250
Re-hang a sagging run, per 20 feet$150 – $300
Replace or upsize one downspout$120 – $220
Add a downspout mid-run$180 – $300
Swap a hail-flattened section, 10–20 feet$200 – $450
Fascia board, per foot$8 – $20
Extensions and splash blocks$25 – $80 each

Most repair calls bundle two or three of these into a $300–$600 morning. After an April hail storm we charge the same prices we charge in October, and we'll write up the damage for your adjuster. The gutter repair page describes each job.

Guards and cleaning

Guards in San Antonio have one enemy that most cities don't: live oak catkins, which fall in April as a fine tangle that slips through cheap screen. Aluminum screen is $5–$9 per foot, stainless micro-mesh $10–$18, reverse-curve $18–$30. A 150-foot house lands between $800 and $2,700. See gutter guards for which type handles which tree.

Cleaning is by the house: $120–$200 single-story, $180–$300 two-story, and the fee is credited toward any repair we find. Details on the gutter cleaning page.

Seven things that change the number

  1. Corners. A gable-roof ranch might have four; a Hill Country hip roof can have fourteen. Each is a miter.
  2. Roof material. Standing-seam metal and clay or concrete tile need specialty hangers and take about a third longer.
  3. Second story. Adds 15–25% for staging and safety.
  4. Fascia. The soft spots hide behind the old gutter. We probe it before quoting so it is on the estimate, not a surprise.
  5. Six-inch versus five. About 20% more, worth it on any roof over 2,500 square feet or with a steep pitch.
  6. Access. Pool decks, agave and yucca beds, rock landscaping, and acreage driveways in Boerne and Helotes all slow a crew.
  7. Color. White, brown, clay and the common trim colors are on the truck. An unusual color means ordering coil and waiting a week.

What a low quote leaves out

Ask three contractors for a gutter estimate San Antonio homeowners often see a $700 spread on the same house. The low number is almost always .027 metal, 2x3 downspouts, spike-and-ferrule hangers, and no tear-off. Get the gauge, the hanger type and spacing, the downspout size, and whether fascia and haul-away are included in writing. What the price per foot actually buys goes line by line, and repair vs. replacement covers the point where patching a 20-year-old system stops making sense.

A written estimate should be free and hold for 30 days.

Questions we get asked

How much does gutter installation cost in San Antonio for a typical house?

For a single-story home with 140–170 feet of gutter, $1,400–$2,200 in 5-inch seamless aluminum and $1,700–$2,400 in 6-inch. Two-story homes in Stone Oak or Schertz with 200-plus feet run $2,400–$3,400. A house that has never had gutters usually only needs the sides that drain toward the slab, often $700–$1,400.

Why do quotes for the same house differ by $700 or more?

Metal thickness, hanger type and downspout size. A quote built on .027 aluminum, spike hangers and 2x3 downspouts is cheaper to install and will need re-hanging in a few years. Ask every bidder for those three specs in writing and the spread usually explains itself.

Will insurance pay for hail-dented gutters after a spring storm?

Often, as part of the roof claim, but most Texas policies carry a 1–2% wind and hail deductible on the dwelling value. On a $350,000 house that is $3,500–$7,000, so a gutter-only claim rarely clears it. We photograph the damage and write a scope either way, so you can decide with real numbers.
