Gutter Repair vs. Replacement in San Antonio: How to Decide
Every gutter estimate we write in San Antonio starts with the same question, and it's not "what's broken." It's "how much life is left in the rest of it." A $200 reseal on a corner is a good buy on a ten-year-old aluminum system and a waste on a forty-year-old galvanized one that will spring the next leak a foot away in October. Here's how we decide, with the numbers.
The four things that settle it
Material. Aluminum doesn't rust and can be resealed and re-hung more or less indefinitely; the metal outlives the sealant and the hangers by decades. Galvanized steel, which is what a lot of pre-1980 San Antonio houses got, rusts from the inside once the zinc coating wears through at the seams. Vinyl goes brittle in our sun and cracks at the corners. Repair aluminum. Think hard about steel. Replace vinyl.
Age. Aluminum gutters here are good for 25–30 years if the hangers hold. Sealant lasts eight to twelve summers. So a fifteen-year-old aluminum system with dripping corners is a reseal job with fifteen years left. A thirty-year-old one with dripping corners, backed-out spikes and a hail dent in every run is on its last set of repairs.
Sectional or seamless. Sectional gutters have a joint every ten feet, and each joint is sealed. If one corner is leaking, the other nineteen joints are the same age with the same sealant. You can chase them for years. Seamless gutters have joints only at the corners and outlets, so a leak is a one-off. Sectional systems past twenty years are usually replacement candidates.
How much is failing. Our rule: if more than a third of the runs need work, the repair bill approaches the replacement bill without the warranty. One corner and one downspout is a repair. Three corners, two sagging runs and a flattened downspout from May's hail is a replacement in disguise.
Put the numbers side by side
A typical single-story house in Windcrest, 150 feet of gutter, four downspouts:

If those four repairs are all the house will need for the next decade, repair wins. If they're the first four of a long list, spending $700 now and another $700 next spring buys you a used gutter system for the price of a new one. That's the whole decision.
When repair is clearly right
- Aluminum, under about 20 years old, with a problem in one or two places
- A single downspout that's crushed, disconnected or too small
- One run sagging because the hangers let go, with sound fascia behind it
- A corner dripping on an otherwise tight seamless system
- Hail dents that are cosmetic and don't close the trough

When replacement is clearly right
- Galvanized steel with rust showing through the paint or pinholes anywhere
- Sectional aluminum older than about 20 years with more than a couple of seams weeping
- 5-inch gutters with 2x3 downspouts on a two-story house that overflows every storm — you'd be resealing something that can't keep up
- Fascia rotted along whole runs, not just under a corner; the gutter has to come down for that anyway
- A hail year that flattened runs on three sides, where the insurance claim covers most of a new system
The San Antonio wrinkle: no gutters to repair
A third option comes up here more than in most cities. The house has a run over the front door, nothing else, and the "repair" someone wants is to fix that one run while the other three sides keep trenching the flower beds. If that's the situation, the sensible spend is usually a first-time installation on the sides that matter, in the same profile as the existing run, rather than money on a single 20-foot section.
Hail makes it easier, not harder
After an April or May storm, insurance adjusters look at gutters as part of the roof claim. If the runs on the exposed sides are dimpled and a couple of downspouts are flattened, the claim often covers replacement of the damaged runs, and matching the rest in the same color is a smaller step from there. Photograph everything before anyone touches it, and get the gutter scope in writing separately from the roof. What we'll do on the estimate
Both numbers. A repair total, and a replacement total, with a one-line note on why we lean one way. If the house is a repair, that's what we sell, and we'll say when we'd expect to see you next. If it's a replacement, we'll say why in terms you can check yourself: rust, seams, age, and the count of things that are failing at once. Nobody should be told their gutters are "shot" without being shown the rust.
