Seamless Gutters in San Antonio: What the Price Per Foot Buys

Get three seamless gutter quotes on the same house in Castle Hills and you'll get something like $1,600, $2,100 and $2,400. Same house, same footage, all "seamless aluminum." The difference isn't margin. It's what's in the aluminum, what's holding it up, and what's been left off. Here is the price per foot taken apart.

The base: $9–$14 per foot in San Antonio

That range covers a 5-inch or 6-inch seamless aluminum gutter, formed on site, with corners, end caps, downspouts, hangers, sealant, labor and haul-away of the old system. Around $9 buys the thin version of everything. Around $14 buys the heavy version. The six line items

Gauge: .027 vs .032

Aluminum gutter coil comes in two common thicknesses. The .027 is what most quotes assume because it's cheaper and lighter. The .032 is about 20% thicker, costs maybe $0.75–$1.25 more per foot, and matters here for one reason: hail. A .027 gutter takes a dent from a one-inch stone; a .032 gutter usually shrugs it off. It also holds pitch better on long runs and doesn't oil-can in the afternoon sun. Ask which gauge the quote is for. If the estimator doesn't know, that's an answer.

Hangers: spikes vs hidden, and spacing

The old spike-and-ferrule hanger is a long nail driven through the gutter into the fascia. It's fast and it's what's on most 1980s–2000s houses in San Antonio, and it's why those gutters sag: the spike works loose from the dried-out board within a decade. A hidden hanger is a bracket clipped inside the gutter and screwed into the rafter tail. Spacing matters too — every 24 inches is standard, every 18 on runs that carry a big roof. Downspouts: 2x3 vs 3x4

A 2x3 downspout is the default; a 3x4 carries nearly double the water and costs about $40 more per downspout including the bigger outlet. On a house with five downspouts that's $200, and it's the difference between a gutter that overflows in a May storm and one that doesn't. Count the downspouts on the quote as well as the size: one per 30–35 feet of run. A quote with four downspouts on 200 feet of gutter has already decided the back run will overflow.

Corners and miters

Every inside and outside corner is a mitered joint, either a factory corner piece or a hand-cut miter, sealed on site. Corners are where seamless gutters leak, so the sealant matters: polyurethane stays flexible through a hundred summers, the cheap stuff cracks in three. A hip roof in Stone Oak with ten corners costs more per foot than a gable in Converse with four, and a quote that doesn't reflect that is guessing.

6-inch where it belongs

Six-inch gutter adds about $2–$3 a foot over five-inch. It's the right call on two-story houses, metal roofs, and any run that collects more than about 700 square feet of roof. Fascia

The item most likely to be missing from a low quote. If a corner of fascia is rotten, the gutter can't hang on it. A good estimate says so up front and prices the board per foot ($8–$20). A cheap estimate finds it on install day and either hangs the gutter on the rot or hands you a change order. A careful estimator probes the fascia with a screwdriver before writing the number.

Adding it up

On a 200-foot two-story house that's the $800 gap. The cheap quote is, almost line for line, the gutter system the house already has, which is the system you're replacing because it sagged and overflowed.

What to ask on the phone

Gauge, hanger type and spacing, downspout size and count, whether 6-inch is quoted where the roof needs it, what sealant, whether fascia was checked, whether haul-away is included, and what the workmanship warranty covers. Measure your own footage first

You can get within about ten percent of a contractor's number with a tape measure on the ground. Walk the house and measure along the ground under each roof edge that has, or needs, a gutter, and add them up. Count the corners where the gutter changes direction and the downspouts, and note which sides are two-story. Multiply the total footage by the per-foot range, then sanity-check each quote. If one quote has 40 more feet than the others, ask why; it might include a porch roof the others missed, or it might be padding.

A worked example

Take a single-story house with 150 feet of gutter and four downspouts. At $9 a foot, the bare-bones version is about $1,350. Move to .032 metal, hidden hangers at 24 inches and 3x4 downspouts, and you're nearer $11–$12 a foot, roughly $1,650–$1,800. Add a fifth downspout on the long back run and a few feet of fascia, and the honest total lands near the top of the $1,400–$2,200 range on the pricing page. Common mistakes when comparing quotes

• Comparing totals without checking the footage on each one.
• Assuming every quote includes haul-away and extensions.
• Treating “seamless” as a spec. It says how the gutter is made, not how thick it is or how it's hung.

• Choosing on price alone and paying again for a re-hang in a few years.

Common questions

Why does a two-story house cost more per foot?

Ladder setup, safety and time. The materials are the same, but each run takes longer to hang. Two-story work here typically adds about 15–25%.

Is the cheapest seamless gutter price per foot ever the right one?

Sometimes, if it lists the same gauge, hangers and downspouts as the others and the company simply has lower overhead. That's why the line items matter: a low price with the same specs is a good deal, and a low price with thinner metal and spikes is a different product.

Does color change the price per foot?

Usually not for the common colors, which most suppliers keep in stock. An unusual color can mean ordering coil and waiting, and sometimes a small surcharge, so ask before you settle on one.

What the price per foot doesn't include

Some items are usually priced separately even on a complete quote: fascia replacement, gutter guards, buried downspout lines, copper or steel, and any carpentry on soffits or rafter tails. Ask whether there is a minimum charge for small jobs and whether a trip charge applies outside the city. Two-story staging is sometimes built into the per-foot price and sometimes added as its own line. None of these are signs of a bad quote, but they're why a per-foot number alone can't tell you the total.
